ToggleCut a bigger hole
When you are looking to repair a drywall hole, you will need to make a larger rectangular or square-shaped hole around the initial one. This step helps you have a uniform section for your patching.
Place a wood piece on the hole
Cut a piece of board that is slightly wider than the original hole. Plywood is a good choice for this step since it is not prone to splitting. Screw-in your piece onto the drywall to create a firm foundation for the patch.
Apply mesh tape
Spread drywall mesh tape over your section and apply a joint compound. Most rookies make a big mistake by using too much or too little drywall mud on the tape.
If you are patching a big hole, use a setting compound for your work. The mixture hardens quickly by a chemical reaction when mixed with water—allowing you to apply multiple layers within a short time.
Sand over the joint compound
You must sand over the joint compound layers to ensure that you have a smooth surface before applying the next layer. Use rough grit for rough walls and softer grit for smooth walls.
Apply a primer, then paint
You can opt to use a self-priming patching material or else purchase a primer separately. Applying a coat of primer conceals any imperfections as well as provides an adhering surface for your paint.
Ensure that you purchase a paint that matches the rest of the wall to avoid shade mismatch. If you can’t find the exact shade, repaint the entire wall for uniform results.
2-3 layers of paint coat are enough. Also, ensure that you do not take up to much paint on your roller or paintbrush to prevent creating paint lines on your drywall.
