How to remove water-soaked drywall
The first step is to remove all water-soaked furniture and building materials from the house. Carpets and upholstery should be removed to allow the basement to breathe. Any water-soaked drywall should be removed when it becomes soft or pliable. If the water level entering the house is minimal, less than 1 foot, you can leave the top of the drywall on the walls.
Note that water accumulates. So if the water level on the walls was only 1 or 2 inches, the damage probably extends 2 to 3 feet from the walls. Even though drywall looks dry just a few inches above the water level, wall insulation can get much wetter. In many cases, it’s a good idea to remove the weakest 2-4 feet from the wall surfaces to fully expose the surfaces behind. This ensures sufficient air circulation for complete drying.
What’s the best way to remove drywall during flood remediation? Measure the distance from the ground to a certain height. At this height, make marks in different places along the affected walls. Connect the marks on the wall with a chalk line to create a straight line at a specific height. Using a utility knife, cut the surface of the drywall along the chalk line, and cut from half to three-quarters of the thickness of the drywall. Using a hammer, carefully drill a small hole in the drywall below this line. Using the hole in the drywall as a handle, gently pull the drywall back and forth to loosen the bolts on the back.
